Hancock College, also known as Allan Hancock College, or simply as AHC, is a community college located in Santa Barbara County, in the state of California. The school first started in 1920. It was located in the Santa Maria High School District. The school was originally named the Santa Maria Junior College. The first classes of the school were postponed until a bond was passed allowing them to start construction on a wing for the college.
Then in 1954, because of an increase in enrollment, the college moved to the previous location of Allan Hancock Field. This is where the college’s school of Aeronautics was establoshed. The field was used by fighter pilots as a training center during the Second World War. Soon after the war, the training center was moved, but the school was renamed as the Allan Hancock College in honor of its namesake. Then in 1958, a bond was passed that allowed the college to purchase the site and build new college programs.
The school then opened a business education building in 1964, and in 1965, the school also built a new fine arts building. Then in 1967, the school built a gymnasium, an administration center and student service center, and the industrial technology building. The next year, a performing arts center was added to the campus. In 2006, a large bond was passed that allowed the additional facilities to be added over the next decade. The next year, a remodel of the Learning center, among the first buildings of the school, was also finished.
Hancock College participates in intercollegiate sporting events. Among the sports fielded by the college included are golf, baseball, basketball, soccer, cross country, tennis, football, volleyball, and track and field. The school colors are blue and gold and the school nickname are the Bulldogs.
